It would NOT be too much of an exaggeration to state that CPAP therapy has certainly turned my life around and, without a shadow of a doubt, prolonged it.
Ten years ago, I was literally in a constant state of near exhaustion. On the best of days I could be described as "merely lethargic". I found myself nodding off at the most inopportune situations. While driving, during business meetings and, in general, any time there was a lull in the conversation. On the highway, I was clearly a danger to myself and others. At work, I was - quite frankly - coming close to losing my job. Home life also suffered as I was relegated to the guest bedroom to toss, turn and snore.
Further complicating matters, I was also serving in the US Navy Reserve at this time. My weekend duties and annual two-week Active Duty periods placed me in similar situations, compounded by the fact that my snoring was causing me to keep the other occupants of the berthing compartment awake as well. I was not the most popular sailor on board the ship and in addition to the usual problems associated with Sleep Apnea, I was being woken up multiple times during the night to be told to "Stop snoring!"
Thankfully, I finally took it upon myself to schedule a sleep study and literally within minutes the diagnosis was in! I picked up my CPAP machine and mask the next day, and found that the first night that I went to bed with everything in place was also the first time I was able to sleep through the night in at least three years. I awoke feeling strangely "refreshed" and have, gladly and without hesitation, donned the apparatus every night since. I am a walking testimonial and happy to admit it.
