I was diagnosed with severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in September this year. I have many medical allergies as well as health conditions. I recently had spinal surgery and my physician suggested that I go and have a sleep test as my health seemed to be continuing to decline. He organized for me to have a mini sleep study test and this confirmed that I had OSA. I then went to a sleep clinic for a one-night titration study.
It took time to get all these tests but it was well worth doing. My older brother also has OSA and he was concerned that I may also have it. My father died 4 years ago and we believe that if he had been using CPAP therapy for his OSA he may have lived longer.
My advice to those who have been diagnosed with OSA but don’t do anything about it is to use your CPAP. I know what impact OSA can have on your life if you are not treating it. I was very careful about the CPAP I chose and my brother recommended the Fisher & Paykel Healthcare 608 with ThermoSmart technology. I had to be extra careful when making this decision as I have many skin allergies and sinus problems.
When I first started using the CPAP, I was getting sinus migraines. I spoke to my sleep specialist about this and was told to change one of the settings on my CPAP. This solved the problem and I have not had any more sinus migraines. I also don’t wake up all dried up like I did in the sleep lab where I had no humidification. I ensure that I clean and maintain my machine as outlined in the operating manual.
CPAP therapy has made me a new person. I used to wake tired and always with a headache. I really struggled to get up in the mornings – I would be in bed for 14 hours and still wake up feeling like I had had no rest.
Once I started using CPAP 10 weeks ago, I never looked back. From the first night, I slept like a log and woke feeling refreshed with lots of energy and no migraines any more. I find breathing on the CPAP very comfortable. I am looking forward to losing some weight and can’t wait to see how my health improves over the next year. My husband and children have told me even my skin has altered and become much clearer and that I am a different woman with much more energy and a lot happier than I was.
I really hope that my experience of using a CPAP and the great impact it has had on my life encourages you. To me, CPAP stands for Continue Positively Always Persist.
Happy sleeping!
